Masthead

These are the two ideas I have for masthead I think the bottom one is too girly which would put off most of my target readers, I like the top one as it is not sexist, i also think its very eye catching and instantly recognisable as a music magazine, due to the music notes. I also think that it is not too busy, this means the name is easy to read and draws the audeince attention to the name.  the bottom one looks a little like a wedding magazine or more of a "girly" magazine.

Font Idea's For Name

I like the top font as it fits into the "Rock" style but the colour makes it fit into "alternative Rock" style which fits into the bold personality of the target audience. I decided on the name entity as i put "unique" into a thesaurus and saw that entity means something similar, it also sounds like band or a music magazine and is easy to remember.

Summary of Reader profile

Reader Profile

My reader/market would be:

  • Age = 14-18
  • Gender =  Mostly Male & some female
  • Class = middel class
  • Style of music = indie-rock/ alternative rock
  • type of education = in college or alternative
  • Interests & Hobbies = I expect my target audience to have a strong interest in the type of music they enjoy, i expect them to have hobbies such as fashion (indie style), i also think they would go to see live bands often. I predict that they will be interested in new and up-coming bands. I think they will enjoy lots of personal interviews with bands and artist both about their career and personal life. They are very bold and unique, have a large soical group meaning they are soicalisng often. Most likely to be part of a social networking site, they mainly use the internet to find music, but also mp3/ipod. They will listen to music though-out the day, but at least once a day.

Kerrang Double page spread

Kerrang double page spread uses lots of different ways to attract the target audience for example they use dark colours that fit the stereotypical image of a rock band. they also use simple language that is very laid back meaning this creates a sense of informal language that makes it easy to read so attracts the target audience, along side this it makes the interview with the band seem very relaxed as if having a chat with a friend. The lead image takes a lot of space up of this double page which is not unusual as it is used to catch the reader’s eye when just flicking though and helps show the audience what the article is about, just by their facial expressions. The pull quote is used in this to ask the read a question “why was he in a tornado of darkness” which in turn encourages the audience to read and find out about it.

NME double page spread

The NME double page spread uses a few different ways to attract the target audience its main way like many other articles in the magazine is the pull quote it instantly attracts the target audience as it is the biggest text on the page, and it is unexplained also shocking for a reader who does not know of this band. It uses lots of images that conform to the “indie” style appearance, for people who already know that band will want to read it simple because they want to know more about them. The background of the picture is very odd (library) this subliminally asks the reader why and what they were doing there. The language is very informal during the interview it explains how they want to work without director’s graphic designers ECT. This is shown by the baseness of the layout and style they also explain the facial expressions during the interview this helps the reader feel closer to the artist, making them enjoy the article therefore buying more magazines later. The picture captions fit along with the article and the picture e.g. “then there were three” and the article explains how they became only 3 and how that has affected them.

Rock Sound double page spread

The day to remember article uses lots of different ways to attract the target audience the first text that catches your eyes is the pull quote which uses the contrast of colours to make it eye catching to the audience, in fact it uses two pull quotes that use the same technique to be a focus for the target audience.  The lead image shows the expression you would expect them to be making having said the pull quote they are also using the same stereotypical image of that type of band by their clothes and make-up. There is a clear house style using black and white to show texts this is also used on the front cover, the link makes it easier to read and to recognise when flicking though.  It uses a rather large drop cap which catches the reader’s eye encouraging them to start reading the article. It uses casual language which would appeal, it also uses words that seem to attract to the male audience. They are also not Glamorised with big lights and non flashing clothing or style, the background is also not glamorised or sexualised which makes more attractive to the male audience.
